Gymea is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Gymea is located 26km south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The post code is 2227, which it shares with adjacent suburb Gymea Bay.

Commercial Area
Gymea is primarily a low density, residential suburb. Located close to Gymea railway station, the suburb’s shopping strip is known as Gymea Shopping Village. Over the last decade it has become a popular shopping and ’café culture’ district with many cafés, restaurants, boutiques and gourmet food shops opened along Gymea Bay Road. Development of such businesses has been to the detriment of some nearby suburbs such as Caringbah and Kirrawee.

Transport
Gymea railway station is on the Cronulla branch of the Illawarra railway line, part of the City Rail network, which provides regular rail services to the city. Gymea railway station is on Gymea Bay Road, in the middle of the main shopping area. Adjacent stations are Kirrawee and Miranda. Private buses, principally operated by Veolia NSW also service the local area and provide school student transport.

Education
The suburb has one public primary school, Gymea North Public School; a Catholic primary school, St Catherine Labouré Primary; and a secondary school, Gymea Technology High School. Many children in Gymea attend schools in Gymea Bay and Kirrawee. Gymea is also home to a campus of the South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE.

Gymea Bay is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Gymea Bay is located 27km south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The post code is 2227, which it shares with the adjacent suburb of Gymea.

Gymea Bay takes its name from the small bay on the north shore of the Port Hacking estuary (also known as the Port Hacking River). The suburb’s extremities are defined by Forest Road on the northeast, Avenel Road on the north, Dents Creek on the west, and the waters of North West Arm and the bay itself to the south. The area is characterised by large amounts of verdant bushland. However, since the 1990s, invasions of feral deer from the Royal National Park have begun to negatively affect the ground cover underneath the tree canopy.

Commercial Area
Gymea Bay is mostly residential, with a small group of shops located in Gymea Bay Road. The suburb’s needs are principally served by shops in neighbouring suburbs, especially Gymea and Miranda.

Schools
The suburb is home to a public primary school, Gymea Bay Public School.

Recreation
Gymea Bay is home to the heritage-listed Gymea Bay Baths, off Ellesmere Road. The bay and Port Hacking estuary are used extensively for watersports such as wakeboarding and water skiing.

Kirrawee is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Kirrawee is located 25km south of the Sydney central business district in the Sutherland Shire. Kirrawee lies between Sutherland, to the west and Gymea, to the east. Kirrawee’s southern border is formed by The Royal National Park, while Kareela and Jannali form the northern border.

Characteristics
Kirrawee has a very distinct split between commercial and residential areas within the suburb. Approximately 90% of the area to the north of the train line is occupied by commercial and industrial properties while almost 100% of the area south of the train line is residential. South Kirrawee, which extends from the train line in the north to the Royal National Park in the south, is considered more desirable as many houses are on quiet roads with beautiful bush outlooks. North Kirrawee is predominantly a commercial/industrial zone comprising of small to medium factories housing local businesses. North Kirrawee is also home to a number of petrol stations, car dealerships and a fast food outlet.

Kirrawee has a small shopping village on Oak Road, adjacent to the train station. It consists of a number of food outlets, newsagent, law firm, accountant, fruit shop and bike shop, among others. The train station and shopping village are located in the geographical centre of the suburb and are serviced by a 150 space carpark. A number of painted murals located around the shopping village and train station are an interesting feature in the suburb.

Transport
Kirrawee Railway Station straddles the Cronulla branch of Cityrail’s Illawarra Line which links Sydney’s southern suburbs to the CBD. Kirrawee is approximately 40 minutes by train to the CBD. Kirrawee is one of the last remaining single platform stations in Sydney. Plans to duplicate the train line from Sutherland to Cronulla will commence in late 2006, with work to be completed by the end of 2008. See Government Website.

Kirrawee has limited bus services operated by Veolia NSW, most of which run down President Avenue, and does not connect the suburb very well.

Schools and Churches
Education facilities within Kirrawee include Kirrawee High School and Kirrawee Public School, along with a number of pre-schools and childcare centres.

St. Mary, St. Bakhomious and St. Shenouda Coptic Orthodox Church, located in Bath Road, was consecrated in 1996.

Grays Point is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Grays Point is located 29km south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The post code is 2232, which is shared with nearby suburbs.

Grays Point is a small suburb with picturesque views of the Port Hacking estuary. Grays Point is adjacent to the Royal National Park and the suburbs of Gymea Bay and Kirrawee. There is only one road available for vehicular access however multiple walking tracks link it with locations such as Audley in the Royal National Park.

Grays Point is largely residential, with a small group of shops located at Grays Point Road, near the intersection of Swallow Rock Drive. Most of its denizens rely on the rest of the Sutherland Shire for their services.

A large variety of wildlife resides in Grays Point, including possums, sugar gliders, Mopoke owls, deer (an introduced species), wallabies, magpies and kookaburas.

Miranda is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Miranda is located 24km south of the Sydney central business district in the Sutherland Shire. The postcode is 2228.
Miranda has a mixture of low, medium and high density residential and is known as a commercial centre for the southern suburbs. Miranda is a popular place to shop and attracts many shoppers from the Sutherland Shire, the St George area and as far away as Wollongong.

Commercial Area
Miranda is most noted for its large Westfield shopping centre (mall), adjacent to Miranda railway station. The shopping centre runs parallel to The Kingsway, and is built on three blocks, crossing over Kiora Road and Wandella Road. This shopping centre was once notable, for being the largest shopping centre in Australia. Originally known as ’Miranda Fair’, the last extension and renovation was completed in 1994, providing 107,000 square metres of retail space. Westfield Miranda was soon eclipsed in size by Parramatta’s Westfield extension. Miranda Fair is currently the 8th largest in Australia. The current largest in Australia is the Knox City Shopping Centre in Wantirna South, Victoria.

Miranda also has a shopping strip, running along The Kingsway and Kiora Road. Numerous commercial developments are also located on these roads and surrounding streets. A smaller shopping centre containing a supermarket and various grocery shops is located nearby in Wandella Road. The railway station is a blessing for residents, making Cronulla beach easily accessible

Yowie Bay is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Yowie Bay is located 24km south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire.

Yowie Bay takes its name from the small bay on the north shore of the Port Hacking estuary (also known locally as the Port Hacking River). It is completely surrounded by the suburb of Miranda and shares the postcode of 2228. It is mostly residential and contains one school, Yowie Bay Public School.

Other nearby suburbs include Caringbah which is located to the east, across the other side of Yowie Bay and the suburb of Gymea Bay to the west, across the bay of the same name.

Commercial Area
Sutherland is mostly a residential area but has a small commercial area close to Sutherland railway station. Sutherland hosts many urban facilities such as a general purpose entertainment centre where citizenship ceremonies take place for individuals living in the Shire, local government council offices and a major central library.

Transport
Sutherland station is a junction on the Illawarra line of the City Rail network. The main line runs south to Waterfall and Wollongong and a branch line runs east to Cronulla.

Veolia NSW has a bus interchange at Sutherland, on both sides of Sutherland station. Services on the eastern side of the station connect Westfield Miranda, Gymea, Kirrawee and Grays Point. Services on the western side connect Loftus, Engadine, Heathcote, Menai, Illawong, Padstow, Bankstown and Woronora.

When the Southern Freeway (also known as the F6) was built linking Sydney to Wollongong, the Princes Highway was diverted away from the centre of Sutherland using Acacia Road. An F6 extension has been proposed for many years, which would link Sutherland to the Captain Cook Bridge via Miranda and onto the Southern Cross Drive via Brighton-Le-Sands.

Sylvania is a suburb, in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Sylvania is located 22km south of the Sydney central business district in the Sutherland Shire. The postcode is 2224.
Sylvania is located on Horse Rock Point, where the Tom Uglys Bridge crosses north over the Georges River to Blakehurst, in the St George area.
Sylvania is mostly residential but also contains some commercial developments on the Princes Highway and Port Hacking Road. Sylvania Heights is a locality in the western part of the suburb. Sylvania Waters is a separate suburb, to the east.

Commercial Area
Southgate Shopping Centre is located on the corner of the Princes Highway and Port Hacking Road. It contains two supermarkets, a discount variety store, specialty shops, a bowling alley, a gymnasium, fast food restaurants and a pub. A small group of shops and restaurants is located on Princes Highway near the foot of Tom Uglys Bridge. Another group of shops is located further west along the Princes Highway at Sylvania Heights, which includes Sylvania Heights Plaza.

Location
Sylvania Waters surrounds Gwawley Bay on the southern side of the Georges River. Sylvania is a separate suburb to the west, and Sylvania Heights is a locality within that suburb. Much of the waterfront areas of Sylvania Waters were reclaimed from Gwawley Bay. Many streets and houses are built on artificial islands. The main road in Sylvania Waters, Belgrave Esplanade, essentially stretches from Tom Uglys Bridge to Captain Cook Bridge - two of the three main northern entry points for the Sutherland Shire across the Georges River

Commercial Area
Sylvania Waters is mostly residential with three small shopping strips located on Belgrave Esplanade. Sylvania Shopping Village is located near Box Road, Sylvania shopping Centre is near Murrumbidgee Avenue and the Richmond Centre is near Richmond Avenue. Doltone House is a function centre close to Sylvania Shopping Village. Sylvania Waters has the highest median sale price for houses in the Sutherland Shire Area - $1.4535 million (2004).

Kangaroo Point is a tiny, picturesque suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Kangaroo Point is located 22km south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire.

Kangaroo Point takes its name from the peninsula which sits on the southern bank of the Georges River. Kangaroo was originally part of the suburb of Sylvania and is completely surrounded by this suburb. The suburbs of Kareela and Oyster Bay are located opposite the waterway of Oyster Bay. Blakehurst, Kyle Bay and Connells Point are located opposite the Georges River.

Kareela is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Kareela is located 24km south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The postcode is 2232, which it shares with neighbouring Kirrawee.

Kareela is located on Oyster Bay, on the southern banks of the Georges River. Kareela Golf Course and Kareela Oval are prominent recreational areas located on either side of Bates Drive. Kareela Primary School is in Freya Street.

Commercial Area
Kareela has a small shopping centre located between Bates Drive and Freya Street. Shops include a Coles supermarket, a newsagent, bakery, butcher, Black Olive deli, Chicken Ace and Video Ezy. The doctor’s surgery located opposite the shopping centre in Freya Street is called Kareela Family Practice.

< name="Caringbah">Caringbah is a suburb, in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Caringbah is located 24km south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Sutherland Shire.
Caringbah stretches from Woolooware Bay on the Georges River to Yowie Bay and Burraneer Bay on the Port Hacking estuary. A number of Caringbah localities have been declared as separate suburbs but still share the postcode 2229. These suburbs are Taren Point to the north on the Georges River and Port Hacking, Lilli Pilli, Dolans Bay to the south on the Port Hacking River.

Commercial Area
Caringbah features a mixture of residential, commercial and industrial areas. The commercial district is made up mostly of small businesses specialising in professional services.
The main shopping centre is located close to Caringbah railway station and is centred around the intersections of President Avenue, the Kingsway and Port Hacking Road South. A small group of shops, known as Caringbah South, is located further south on Port Hacking Road South. Another small group of shops is located even further south, close to the border of Lilli Pilli. Caringbah however is recently being over-developed by powering business companies and a council with no respect for its towns residents. The percentage of townhouses has grown by 23% in the last 18 months, and the poulation of Caringbah has risen 16%. If these statistics are to continue, the peaceful town once known as Caringbah will become nothing more than an over-populated super-urbanised city.

Schools
There are three secondary schools and a number of primary schools in Caringbah. The secondary schools are Caringbah Selective High School, Endeavour Sports High School and De La Salle College. De La Salle College is a school for boys from year 7 to year 10. The primary schools include Caringbah Public School, Caringbah North Public School, Laguna Street Public School and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School.

Hospitals
Caringbah is home to the public district Sutherland Hospital and Kareena Private Hospital.

Transport
Caringbah is a central suburb of the Sutherland Shire, considering some of the main roads intersect here. President Avenue and the Kingsway both run from Sutherland via Miranda in the west, to the popular beachside suburb of Cronulla in the east. Taren Point Road leads north to the Captain Cook Bridge, St George area and further north to the Sydney CBD.
Caringbah railway station is on the Cronulla branch of the Illawarra line on the City Rail network. Caringbah Bus Service runs buses to Lilli Pilli and Westfield Miranda and BusLink runs services to Cronulla and Westfield Miranda. Sydney Buses provide bus services to Rockdale and Westfield Miranda, but there are only limited Sydney Buses services that travel into the commercial area near the railway station.

Burraneer Bay Marina is located on the western shore of Burraneer Bay.
